Preparation for Storage
The first step before any maintenance is started is to review your repair expenses for the past striping season. If they seem somewhat high, is there any correlation to the amount of time spent on preventive maintenance? To begin with, empty the bead tank of all beads and thoroughly clean the paint tanks. The paint tanks should be scraped down to the bare metal. Remove all dried paint and debris. Give the striper a good general surface cleaning. The following checklist is organized on a system format.

While servicing and preparing your striper for storage also service the carrier vehicle. Don't forget to make a list of any parts removed from inventory and have them replaced prior to the striping season. Remember a complete maintenance program also means keeping good maintenance records. Regular maintenance improves the efficiency of your equipment and prolongs its useful life.

Auxiliary Engine

• Replace air, fuel and oil filters.
• Check condition of V-belts and alignment of pulleys.
• Change oil.
• Prepare engine for storage as per manufacturer’s recommendations.

Air Supply System

• Replace filters on air compressor.
• Change oil.
• Check condition of V-belts and alignment of pulleys.
• Prepare air compressor for storage as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
• Replace elements on airline filters.
• Thoroughly clean airline lubricators.
• Test air regulators, air gauges and air solenoids to see if they are working properly and repair or replace as needed.
• Check operation of air cylinders and repair or replace as needed.
• Inspect safety valves and airlines in system and replace as needed.

Hydraulic System

• Replace hydraulic oil filter.
• Replace hydraulic oil or have it tested to determine its condition.
• Check hydraulic pressure gauges for accuracy.
• Inspect all hydraulic hoses especially those that operators come in close contact with.
• Repair any hydraulic leaks. Leaking hydraulic oil can be a safety hazard and it is a detriment to the environment.
• Check condition of V-belts and alignment of pulleys.
• Check operation of all hydraulic cylinders, pressure reducing valves and orbit motors and repair or replace as needed.

Bead Supply System

• Empty complete system of beads.
• Check gaskets and safety valves on bead tank and replace as needed.
• Inspect bead hoses and replace as needed.
• Test bead dispensers and repair or replace as needed.

Paint Supply System

• Empty complete system of paint. Flush system as per equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. If there is any build-up inside the hoses or plumbing, remove and clean or replace.
• Inspect paint hoses for any breaks or abrasions and replace. DO NOT REPAIR!
• Thoroughly clean all filters and replace any torn filter screens, o-rings and gaskets.
• Thoroughly clean and rebuild paint pumps and replace any worn parts.
• Prepare pumps for storage as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
• Thoroughly clean and rebuild paint guns and replace any worn parts.
• Inspect spray tips or gun nozzles and replace as needed.
• Pump a light oil through the system to protect metal surfaces.

Electrical System

• Test skipline controller. If it needs calibration or some toggle switches are sticking or broken off, return to equipment manufacturer for repair.
• Test any safety lighting such as strobes or arrow boards.
• Inspect the wiring harnesses and repair as needed.
